Philadelphia journalist, 39, was ‘in a relationship’ with his killer, 19

A slain Philadelphia journalist was “in a relationship” with a teenager suspected in his murder, police say.

Police say Josh Kruger was shot 7 times in his South Philadelphia townhouse at 1:28 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2.

Kruger, 39, managed to stumble outside to seek help before dying about a half hour later at a local hospital.

An arrest warrant was issued for Robert Edmond Davis, 19, who is homeless and has had prior run-ins with police.

Police say there was no sign of forced entry into Kruger’s townhome.

“At this time we believe that Mr. Kruger was trying to help Mr. Davis, and they were acquaintances,” Lt. Hamilton Marshmond said in a carefully worded statement at a news conference on Friday. “He was just trying to help him just get through life.”

But another law enforcement source told The Philadelphia Enquirer the shooting was domestic, and Kruger and Davis had been in a relationship.

“Our goal is to have Mr. Davis taken into custody in a safe manner for the public, our officers and himself,” Marshmond said.

Kruger overcame homelessness and drug addiction to become a social justice activist for the homeless and LGBT+ communities. He also worked as a spokesman for Philly’s Democratic mayor James Kenney.

Kruger, who was openly gay, was diagnosed with HIV during his time living on the streets. He was on HIV medication and lived a healthier lifestyle, according to DailyMail.com.

Kruger regularly downplayed gun violence in Philadelphia. In a 2021 Twitter post, he wrote, “Some idiot just said you’re more likely to get shot and killed than die of COVID in Philly. Folks, four times as many Philadelphians have died of COVID than gun shots this year. I understand math is hard but do better.”

Days before he died, Kruger mocked a 2020 prediction by Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams who said, “there’s a good chance you will be dead” if Biden is elected.

“The Dilbert dude is like Nostradamus. Look at this prediction from 2020. Wow. Eerie,” Kruger wrote. Two days later, Kruger was shot dead.
