Beloved news anchor Emily Matson committed suicide by jumping in front of a train near her home in Erie, Pennsylvania, according to reports.

Matson was struck by a train and killed around 12:45 a.m. in an isolated area on Monday, Dec. 11.

The coroner ruled her death a suicide.

Matson, 42, was a celebrated journalist who worked for Erie News Now for nearly 20 years. She was married to a police officer and they did not have any children.

Her colleagues and viewers were shocked by the news of her suicide on Monday. Her last day at work was on Friday.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of our beloved Erie News Now news anchor Emily Matson,” said Scott MacDowell, Erie News Now’s news director.

Tributes have poured in on social media for Matson.

“Emily was such a presence in the newsroom and in the studio, and I can’t count the number of times that I would stop by her desk to talk to her or just listen to her talk to others,” wrote meteorologist Sara Tonks.

“It’s National Brownie Day! Look what my favorite coworker at 7 o’clock brought! She’s so kind! But she forgot the milk,” he wrote.

The investigating is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding Matson’s death. Colleagues say she did not appear to be depressed in her final days.
