Mea Culpa, Starring Kelly Rowland, Zooms to No. 1 On Netflix

Tyler Perry’s “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes, debuted in the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list in the US.

Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the erotic legal thriller was released on Netflix on February 23.

Rowland also produced Mea Culpa, which wrapped filming in Atlanta in just 20 days.

On Saturday, Rowland took to Twitter to thank her loyal fans, affectionately named #RowlandStones.

Mea Culpa stars Rowland as rigid and unemotional criminal defense attorney, Mea Harper, who represents an artist accused of killing his girlfriend.

Mea culpa is a Latin phrase meaning “my fault.”

Rhodes (center) plays the suspect artist Zyair Malloy.

The New York Times notes that Rowland “commits to the thankless task of playing a smart woman gone stupid.” While Rhodes “can’t do much with Zyair, whose affect is more flat than seductive.”

According to The Independent, Netflix viewers say Mea Culpa is one of the worst movies ever made.

Rotten Tomatoes audience score for Mea Culpa is 40% out of 100, and Metacritic gave it a 35 out of 100.

The blog reviews are equally as brutal.

One viewer wrote: “I feel like I didn’t miss anything and while it was a good looking cast, you could tell it was a [Tyler Perry] production. Too many loose ends, and too predictable.”

Another person wrote: “The production was nice but the story line was predictable and the conclusion was rushed. I do wish Tyler brought in writers to work with him so that there is more depth to his stories.”

And a third person wrote: “That’s time out of my life I can never reclaim. Kelly can’t act.”
