A Cobb County (GA) teacher is fighting to keep her job after she was placed on leave for reading a book about gender ideology to her fifth-grade class.

Due West Elementary fifth-grade teacher Katie Rinderle told FOX 5 Atlanta she picked up the book “My Shadow is Purple” from the school’s book fair.

She said her students, ages 9 and 10, chose the book from several options for her to read to the class in March.

The book features a non-binary boy character whose “shadow” wears a dress. The book focuses on challenging society’s gender norms.

After reading the book to her class, Rinderle and the students discussed the book’s subject.

“That’s what our conversation was really focusing on … the power of not only embracing your unique differences and abilities, but then valuing those in others and learning from those,” Rinderle said in a video from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Less than a month after giving her students an assignment on gender ideology, a parent complained to the Cobb County School District.

Rinderle, a teacher for 10 years, was placed on leave pending a termination hearing on Thursday, Aug. 10.

The school district said her choice of book violated Georgia’s Divisive Concepts Law, which was passed in 2022. The law gives parents more control over what’s taught in the classroom.
